iPad 2 Review

The Apple iPad 2 is a revolutionary new tablet computer that is outfitted with a 9.7 inch display and weighs just 1.3 pounds. Released on March 11, 2011, the iPad 2 still boasts the traditional 10 hour battery life, but does boast a robust dual core A5 processor to boost the overall performance of the device.  Although 33% thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the Apple iPad 2 features two cameras, one being a front camera for FaceTime and the rear one to capture video at 720p HD.

The new improvements on the iPad are in line with what customers expect from an Apple device and while there are some that criticize it as being an incremental upgrade, the markedly improved features speak for themselves. The lighter feel is just the beginning, which tapers to a sharper edge that leads to a flat back, which is a simulation of the MacBook Air.

The iPad 2 is cast with just two pieces of aluminum, which is Apple’s sole secret to a lighter and thinner model. One of the challenges of the tapered edges is the plugging of the dock connector, especially in scarce light zones, but is a breeze, after a few days use. The build in speakers on the new iPad are yet another perk to brag about and although the quality of sound remains the same, the volume is slightly louder.

Although the cameras are the most heralded aspect of the iPad 2, they still tend to be a bit grainy and were primarily intended for video conferencing and to snap photos to import to Evernote. Just like the iPhone 4, the Apple iPad 2 is fitted with a gyroscope, which enables the device to sense movement and rotation. However, the original iPad does have an accelerometer that helps enhance the feel of motion, but is not as accurate as the sensing of the gyroscope in space. This accurate movement also helps the apps perform faster, especially when you lay it down with the smart cover.

The one thing that is common to both models is the screen size and resolution, meaning that the reading and viewing angles remain the same. The iPad 2 is available with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on all models, but you can always opt for a 3G + Wi-Fi device. The new dual core A5 processor essentially multiplies the processing speed of the tablet, with the graphics speed delivering 9 times the performance of its predecessor. Not to mention, the iPad tablet 2 also sees an increase in Ram up to 512 MB.

All of these increases lead to a snappier iPad 2, which is seemingly noticeable in the Safari and iBook applications. The excelled graphics come handy while playing an intense game such as the infinity blade, where the details in character are much more distinct. The common problems of the original device was the wait time for pages while browsing, but the increase in Ram on the iPad 2 simply allows users to experience an exceptional browsing experience.

The iPad 2 is graced with a larger speaker at the bottom and unlike the hidden speaker on the iPad, has a much larger grill on the back. This new placement makes it much easier to grip the device in order to experience a louder direct sound.   Although the audio does not showcase its best with audiophiles, it does work brilliantly with a pair of decent headphones or when jacked in to a pair of speakers.

Let’s not forget the battery life on the iPad 2, which is simply stellar and is surprisingly impressive considering the faster processors, size and weight. In order to preserve the battery life, one can activate the airplane mode and dim the screen to earn a few more hours.
